Efficacy and Safety of Double Dose Tamsulosin (0.8 Mg) for Management of BPH.

<h2 id="aim">Aim</h2><p>The objective of the study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of double-dose tamsulosin (0.8 mg) for the management of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), in patients not responding on standard dose tamsulosin (0.4 mg) and are unsuitable for transurethral resection (TUR) intervention.</p><h2 id="methods">Methods</h2><ul><li>111 patients experiencing severe BPH symptoms were prospectively analyzed between November 2022 and July 2023.</li><li>Patients received a double dose of tamsulosin for one month.</li><li>Pre- and post-treatment parameters including the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS),prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, prostate volume, peak urinary flow rate (Qmax), post-void residual (PVR) volume were evaluated.</li></ul><h2 id="results">Results</h2><ul><li>All 111 patients completed the study, the mean age, PSA level, and prostate volume were 63.12, 3.42 ng/ml, and 50.37 ml, respectively.</li><li>Significant improvement in IPSS score (Fig. 1), Qmax (Fig. 2) and post-void residual volume (Fig. 3) (p-value &lt; 0.001 for all) was observed in 93 out of 111 patients.</li><li>Low adverse events were observed in this study which were comparable across earlier studies conducted with selective a1- blockers.</li></ul><figure class="image"><img style="aspect-ratio:804/561;" src="https://cdn.megawecare.com/GHBY/Internal-Images/symptomatic-score-ipss.webp" width="804" height="561"></figure><figure class="image"><img style="aspect-ratio:787/511;" src="https://cdn.megawecare.com/GHBY/Internal-Images/urofow-q-max-presentation.webp" width="787" height="511"></figure><figure class="image"><img style="aspect-ratio:766/501;" src="https://cdn.megawecare.com/GHBY/Internal-Images/post-void-residual-urine-volume.webp" width="766" height="501"></figure><h2 id="conclusion">Conclusion</h2><p>Double dose of tamsulosin 0.8mg shows good efficacy and safety and is a viable temporary management option for BPH in patients who have not responded to the standard single dose 0.4mg tamsulosin and are not suitable candidates for TUR intervention.</p>
